I have always loved this quote by Stephen Covey, “Begin with the end in mind.” It reminds me that it’s more beneficial to look ahead and see what I want the finished product or goal to look like and then work backward to establish a plan of action to get to it.
I just finished using this strategy with one of my precious clients. She’s had a goal for 3 years. She’s admittedly tried, stopped and restarted, procrastinated and was very frustrated. I recommended to her that we work on envisioning the goal in it’s completed state. In other words, see herself reaching that goal. I coached her through a series of questions.
Two of those questions were:
1. What does it feel like to have reached the goal?
2. Whose life can you impact because of it?
She took the assignment seriously and answered the questions with the “end in mind”. As a result of that work, I helped her to create a strategy around those answers to get to that end result. She’s doing the work and she’s seeing the benefits. I do the work in my own life because I believe in never quitting on what you know God has purposed for you.
