What kills a dream more than failure? Doubt. Why? Because doubt leads to procrastination and procrastination leads to a stand-still and that leads to nothing tried, nothing done which ultimately means discontentment.

I’m going to share another post regarding failure and a healthier way to examine the times we don’t hit the mark the way we desire. In other words, the times you may fail at something but for now let me say, failure at least means you’re trying–trying something new or reinventing an old thing into something new. If it doesn’t work and you fail, no harm done as you can begin again.  Doubt however, can cause a person to never move ahead–to be hindered from exploring or trying something new.  Doubt kills a dream far more than failure.

3 questions to ask yourself  when you are experiencing doubt:

1.  Who are you doubting when it comes to your dream or purpose? Perhaps yourself.

2.  What are you doubting? Perhaps you doubt that you can REALLY succeed. The dream or goal may sound good in your thoughts or written out on paper but the real challenge comes when it’s time to take action. That’s when doubt creeps in.

3.  When do you doubt? Just when you’re about to take a step forward. Suddenly, you get weak in the knees. You begin to question if you have the education, skill-set and resources. You begin to doubt if family and friends will support you, and if they won’t then you automatically think the public won’t either. All the doubt questions surface to kill your dream.

How can you work through the doubt?

Realize at the onset that you may make some mistakes. You may have moments where you attempt to do something and it doesn’t work out the way you planned. Accept at the start that not everyone is going to understand or support your dream, goal or purpose. My youngest adult daughter has a sign on her wall that says, Don’t overthink it.  That’s brilliant isn’t it? I think so. It’s just that simple. Let’s not overthink yet that’s exactly what we do.  Do you know that you can think about something for so long that you literally talk yourself out of doing it because you doubt that you can do it?  So if overthinking is your area of temptation then I invite you to put a big sign up for you to see that says, Don’t Overthink It.

Believe in yourself because God already believes in you. He has a plan and a purpose for your life (Jeremiah 29:11) and it’s a good one. Don’t kill your dream before you act upon it. I’m a huge advocate for hope and prayer, but you also have to also stir up the courage within you and take a step of faith. Until you do you’ll never know what you may be able to accomplish. I am a firm believer that we live way below our potential in so many ways. Everything that we need to live the life we are purposed to live is already within us. Sometimes we need support, clarity and courage to bring it to the surface.

Let me close with what I said at the beginning: Doubt leads to procrastination and procrastination leads to a stand-still and that leads to nothing tried, nothing done which ultimately means discontentment. Don’t let this year be another year of doubt. What’s one decision and action step you can take today that will move you forward and out of the realm of doubting yourself?
